California psychiatry: credentialing questions for the actual role
Use this specialty-focused checklist to prepare questions and organize evidence, not as a statement that every employer imposes the same requirements. Credentialing, state authority and site privileges remain distinct decisions. Ask the receiving organization what it needs to verify and what remains outstanding before the appointment begins.
- Use California’s application route that fits your physician and postgraduate-training license history, and distinguish issued licensure from employer onboarding.
- Document the psychiatry training and exact board status relevant to the proposed age group and clinical scope; do not equate board eligibility with certification.
- For inpatient or consultation locums, assign urgent follow-up, medication questions and the handoff after the coverage period in writing.
- For telepsychiatry, establish patient location, the applicable licensing and prescribing basis and a local emergency route, independently of platform access.
- Review message coverage, documentation time and malpractice protection for the actual appointment; an existing primary job does not answer those questions for outside work.
The underlying distinctions are described in the AMA credentialing, privileging and enrollment guidance. For remote work, consult HHS licensing across state lines; do not infer patient-state authority from an app account, a submitted application or an existing job.
