PA Locum Tenens Work: Destination and Assignment Checks

PA locum tenens work is temporary clinical coverage with destination-specific practice and facility requirements. Confirm your authority, the service’s approval and the complete assignment terms before committing to travel or a start.

Create your Saile profile

Begin with the destination and the service

A temporary assignment is easier to assess when the organization names the destination, clinical setting and duties. Ask whether the work covers a specific service, several locations or remote patients as well. List the procedures and patient populations involved, then compare them with your recent experience. A PA license and certification do not answer whether a new service expects clinical work you are prepared to perform.

Discuss clinical fit before making travel commitments. A description such as coverage needed can omit admissions, procedures, discharge work or call. Ask the service leader to explain the assignment and available support. The goal is to know what you are accepting, not simply where you are going. This guide describes preparation and does not establish that an assignment is currently available.

Compact context is not permission to start

The PA Compact provides a role-specific privilege pathway, separate from the physician Interstate Medical Licensure Compact. Existing project data preserves the official PA Compact statement as of August 28, 2026: no states were actively issuing privileges yet. That dated statement should not be treated as a present-day status guarantee. Use the official compact website and the destination board to check current operations, eligibility and whether a privilege is actually available to you.

Membership and individual authorization are different facts. If a compact privilege is not available or does not apply to your circumstances, ask the responsible board about the appropriate licensing route. The practice laws of the destination still matter. Do not extrapolate physician compact rules to PAs or assume the phrase multistate assignment means authorization has already been arranged.

Rebuild the practice arrangement for the new site

AAPA’s state-law resources explain why PA practice rules must be checked jurisdiction by jurisdiction. Ask about any supervision, collaboration or practice agreement required for this service and who is responsible for it. Identify the clinical contact available during your work and the process for escalation. An arrangement maintained by a previous employer should not be assumed to satisfy a new assignment.

If several locations are involved, confirm how the organization applies its permissions and practice arrangements at each. Remote encounters add patient-location questions under HHS guidance. Keep the destination-state answer and facility approval distinct so an outstanding requirement remains visible. A recruiter can coordinate information, but the responsible board and clinical organization must provide the applicable decisions.

Readiness includes the service’s everyday workflow

Ask the facility what it must verify about your education, licenses, certification, experience and procedure history. Find out which privileges or clinical permissions are needed and how final clearance will be communicated. Clarify administrative access and any payer arrangements separately rather than using a single onboarding label for all of them. Do not promise a start on the basis of a submitted file alone.

A hypothetical inpatient assignment illustrates the operational side: you might need to understand admission orders, discharge communication and who receives unresolved results after your last day. Ask the service to describe these workflows during orientation. This is not a claim that every locums role includes those duties. It is a way to identify the obligations that the assignment description may not mention.

Travel arrangements should survive a changed assignment

Request written terms for the location, schedule, accommodations if supplied, transportation if supplied and expenses that remain yours. Ask what happens if the assignment is delayed because clearance is unfinished, the service changes or the agreement ends early. There is no universal travel package implied by the words locum tenens. Clarifying responsibility is more useful than assuming a standard benefit.

Discuss cancellation and changes before incurring costs. Identify who can authorize extra work, a different site or an extension, and how those changes are documented. Compare travel with your main-job obligations and outside-work rules. A temporary role still needs a workable plan for returning to your regular responsibilities without hidden overlap in clinical availability.

Resolve insurance before the assignment begins

Confirm professional liability coverage for the actual PA service and locations. Ask who provides the policy, what clinical activities it includes and how a claim reported after the assignment ends is addressed. Claims-made reporting protection deserves an explicit conversation about any needed tail or other extended reporting arrangement. AMA tail guidance explains the issue in physician employment; ask your insurer how the PA policy and contract apply to you.

The agreement should identify who is responsible for coverage at departure and for any required reporting protection. Do not assume contractor status automatically means you must purchase the policy yourself, or that organization-provided coverage answers every question. Keep the confirmation and policy information with the assignment documents, and revisit them if duties or practice locations change.

Payment is one part of the assignment record

Ask whether compensation is defined by hour, shift or another unit and how orientation, required administrative work and extra time are treated. Record the invoicing or payroll process and the treatment of expenses. No rate, earnings projection or tax estimate is provided here. Temporary coverage is a work format, not a compensation benchmark.

The IRS employee-or-contractor guidance evaluates control and the actual relationship. Discuss classification with the contracting entity and take personal tax questions to a qualified adviser. Compare the PA per diem guide if local occasional shifts might better match your goals. In Saile, keep credentials and destination preferences current and evaluate an actual opportunity only after the practice, clearance, travel and coverage questions have concrete answers.

Does this guide establish an available opening?

No. Check an actual listing and confirm its requirements with the hiring organization; this educational page does not promise an opening.

Does an occupational wage establish a side-gig rate?

No. Employee occupational wages are source context, not a quote for contractor work or an individual shift. Review the actual written agreement.
