Where can physician assistants find side gigs?

PAs can look through healthcare employers, professional contacts and organizations seeking flexible clinical coverage or medical expertise. Evaluate the actual responsibilities, state licensing rules, any required supervision or collaboration, and the employer’s onboarding requirements before accepting.

Translate your experience into a role description

A PA's search is more useful when it explains what services you can safely cover rather than merely requesting extra shifts. Describe your recent specialty experience, the clinical tasks you perform, the settings you know and the support you need for unfamiliar situations. Ask prospective employers to provide the same level of detail about their assignment. A familiar specialty name can still conceal different patient acuity, procedures or expectations about independent decisions. Discuss how consultation works during the actual hours you would be present. That conversation helps both parties distinguish a suitable supplementary role from work that requires a different level of preparation or orientation.

Find the person responsible for clinical approval

Facility staffing teams, practice managers and colleagues may point you toward possible work, but identify the clinical leader and the person managing credentialing before assuming the assignment is ready. Ask who contracts with you and which service receives your work. For a role at another employer, clarify how any state-required supervision or collaboration will be arranged and documented. A relationship established for your primary job should not be presumed to transfer. If the work is remote, establish the patient locations and the organization's process for assigning clinicians to them. The right contact can explain local requirements more reliably than a general recruitment description.

A practical review list

  1. List recent specialty skills and the consultation support you expect for side work.
  2. Identify the contracting employer and the service responsible for your clinical approval.
  3. Ask the PA board about practice authority and the current compact process where relevant.
  4. Recheck permissions if the assignment changes setting, prescribing duties or patient states.

Check permissions before agreeing to availability

Review your outside-work obligations with your primary employer and confirm coverage with the insurer for the additional assignment. Ask the new organization whether it requires a separate credential file, references or approval for the duties you will perform. For work in another state, verify the licensing route with that state's PA board; a compact's existence is not proof that you hold a usable privilege. If prescribing is involved, address state requirements and DEA questions specifically. Keep the written assignment scope together with the approval and coverage information. This makes it easier to notice when a later request changes the role beyond what you originally accepted.

Applying this to your situation

During early conversations, ask how the service evaluates a PA whose recent experience comes from another setting. Request clarity about orientation, assessment and access to consultation rather than assuming the employer will add those later. Explain procedures you currently perform and areas where you need support without overstating independent experience. A hiring team may be willing to discuss a narrower assignment, but that discussion is not clinical authorization. Keep the eventual written duties aligned with the role you actually reviewed so a later scheduling request does not expand the responsibility beyond your preparation or approved practice arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Can my main-job arrangements automatically cover a side role?

Do not assume that. Confirm any required supervision, collaboration, coverage and employer approval for the separate assignment.

Does PA Compact membership mean I can immediately practice there?

No. Confirm current availability, eligibility and issuance of the required privilege with the compact and state board.

Can PAs consider non-clinical work?

Yes, but define the duties and check contract, confidentiality and professional-liability implications for the particular role.
